What My Days Actually Look Like as a Designer & WFH Mom

Not the aesthetic “day in my life”… the real one (with snacks, emails, and a toddler climbing me)

I feel like there are two versions of “working from home as a mom” online:

One is:
slow mornings, iced coffee, perfectly quiet house ☁️

The other is:
chaos, cheerio crumbs, and answering emails with one hand

My life?
It’s somewhere in the middle.

Because I don’t do this the same every day — I have a mix of childcare days and home days with my son, and they look very different.

So here’s the honest version.

Childcare Days (aka: CEO mode activated)

These are my “get things DONE” days.

I’m waking up with intention (and coffee, obviously),
sitting down at my desk, and actually finishing thoughts… revolutionary.

This is when I:

  • Work on client projects

  • Build out websites start to finish

  • Take calls / consults

  • Do deep creative work

It’s focused. Structured. Quiet-ish.

And honestly?
This is where the momentum in my business happens.

Home Days (aka: flexible, but i make it work)

Now this is a different vibe.

I’m still working… just not in long, uninterrupted stretches.

It looks like:

  • Answering emails during nap time

  • Voice noting ideas while playing

  • Doing light tasks instead of heavy design work

  • Pausing every few minutes for snacks (his… and mine)

These days aren’t about output.
They’re about maintenance + presence.

And I’ve had to learn that’s okay. The office can wait.

The biggest shift I had to make

I stopped expecting every day to look the same.

That was the thing that was burning me out the most.

I used to think:
“If I don’t get 6–8 hours of solid work in, I’m behind.”

But that’s not realistic in this season.

Now I plan my business around my life:

  • Big work on childcare days

  • Light work on home days

Not the other way around.

What this has actually taught me

Structure doesn’t have to mean rigidity.

I still run a business.
I still show up professionally.
I still deliver for my clients, on time and with great performance

But I do it in a way that:

  • Honors my time as a mom

  • Keeps my work intentional

  • Doesn’t require me to be “on” 24/7

And truthfully?

It’s part of the life I was trying to build in the first place.

If you’re in a similar season, let this be your reminder:

You don’t need to force someone else’s routine to be successful.

You just need one that actually works for your life.

Even if it includes snack breaks, nap time emails,
and the occasional toddler on your lap during a Zoom call.

We’re making it work… and doing it well 🤍
